SHEFFIELD JOINT OMNIBUS COMMITTEE 1156
50th ANNIVERSARY TOUR
30th November 2008
On 20th November 1958, Sheffield Joint Omnibus
Committee 1156, (3156 WE), a Leyland PD2/30 with
Charles H Roe H33/26RD bodywork entered service,
remaining in the Sheffield 'C' fleet until 31st December
1969, after which the bus moved to Yorkshire Woollen
District, remaining in service at Dewsbury Depot until
the end of 1972 and eventually finding its way to Don's
of Dunmow before entering preservation in 1976.
The vehicle is still a fully licensed P.C.V. and to mark
it's 50th anniversary the Sheffield Transport Study Group have organised an outing on Sunday 30th November 2008.
1156 will depart from Brown Street, Sheffield, at 9.00 am, and run to Bradford, following the route of former service 66 as closely as possible, (Sheffield-Ecclesfield-Chapeltown-Hoyland Common-Barnsley-Dewsbury-Heckmondwike-Cleckheaton-Oakenshaw-Bradford), a service on which 1156 saw regular use. From Bradford the tour will proceed direct to Dewsbury for a visit to the Dewsbury Bus Museum and the Arriva depot (where hi-viz jackets or vests MUST be worn). Light refreshments will be available at the Bus Museum. As well as being able to view the vehicles in the collection it is hoped to have a run out in former West Riding 733, (EHL 344), a 1952 Leyland Tiger PS2/12A with Charles H Roe bodywork. To commemorate 1156's time with Yorkshire Woollen it is hoped to cover at least one of the services on which it was used, before returning direct to Sheffield.
It will be possible for participants to join and leave the tour at Dewsbury and it may be possible to arrange other pick up/set down points by negotiation.
